It may well have been real, but nothing as spectacular as we imagine. Advantaged technology at that time could mean anything.

No one can know, that's why it's a myth.
Do I, a fairly well read and open minded individual believe it existed?
No.
Do I believe it could possibly have existed?
A doubtful yes.
There is no strong archeaological evidence for it's existance while there are plenty of ruins and site of civilizations much older that have been found. This is why I do not believe there ever was a "lost" civilization of Atlantis.
However, the forces in the Earth that build mountains, dry up seas and other major geological events are pretty amazing. How can we know something spectacular didn't happen to make an entire island nation disapper very rapidly.
I am not ready to simply state that because it COULD have happened, that it did.
Note to "ryan s." Not every legend starts from fact. I don't recall any "fact" that placed a giant bear in the night sky, or that there is any factual basis for a pantheon of gods on a Greek mountain.
What you said about Troy is very true, but until such evidence of Atlantis is found, I'll withold my belief. Because traces of Troy were discovered do you now beleive that Achilies was protected by the Gods because Athena dipped him in some kind of "magic" water?

It is now commonly believed to have been the Island of Santorini, and they controlled some of Crete as well, A society previously called Minoans is now accepted by some to have been the society Plato called Atlantis.
The problems come from translations through the ages and use of the Term "Pillars of Heracles" which most assume to be the strait of Gibralter, but some claim that there were other "pillars of heracles" in the ancient world.
Another theory is that Troy was Atlantis, and that Plato stopped writing Atlantis when he realized that Homer had chronicled it in the Illiad.

tell your friend that every legend starts from fact no matter what. look at troy also every body thought it was a tall tale from him also. but they found troy weather Atlantis was as advanced as we think. we will never know but i think there is a real place even Egypt wrote about a very advanced seafaring culture.
note to Vince M a legend is A traditional story or collection of related stories popularly regarded as true but actually containing a mixture of fact and fiction. that means they are about real people or places. no Achilies wasn't protected by the gods. but yes he was a great worrior was he not? Mythology is about the gods

There is too much hype surrounding it that may mislead some. But I believe it was a real place. If we could have traveled this earth just 5000 years ago I think we would be surprised.

I think the legend of Atlantis, Pangaia, Mu, and the Great flood are all different tellings of a great tragedy.

There's alot of proof of an advanced civilization that may have existed, but not as an underwater utopia.
