OK, i have linksys. So i don't know about your router, what i do know is that if you go there site and search in for SSD (security for wireless network) They will guide you step by step. They will first give you site to go to, there you go under security and set a password. They'll give you a awebsite like this 198.168.1.1, but that's for linksys.

Hey Dude,

I am sure there are a bunch of computer geeks like me out there shaking their head. You might as well be asking us to explain the nuclear reaction comparisions between Uranium 232 and Plutonium.

I'll give you the 50cent tour to get you started.

Unless your wireless access point and your wireless card are from the same manufacturer, paired for eachother, forget WPA.

I'll get you setup with a good basic setup. I am not familiar with your device, however, the standards are pretty much all the same.

You are going to want to run WEP, 128 bit, shared key, with MAC authentication, and turn off broadcast of SSID.

First things first. You have to give your router an SSID. This is what the network is going to be called. I can be ANYTHING. You just must match it in your workstation config. You also need to turn off SSID broadcast.

For WEP, you probably have a few options. Choose 128 bit hex. Either generate it or do it yourself. WRITE DOWN THIS NUMBER. It should be a 26 digit number.

Forget Radius, unless it local MAC authentication.

What you want to look for is some sort of MAC authentication. Get the MAC address from your computer by opening a command prompt and typing "ipconfig /all". This should give you much more information than you care about. You are looking for the Wireless physical address. It should look something like 00-ab-12-ef-34-56. You will need to enter this into your wireless router.

Now, for the workstation.

You need to enter the SSID and the WEP Key (as shared). If you did it all right, it should work and be somewhat secure.

If you want to go beyond this, take a class.

Radius is a service that runs to authenticate users or computers. Your device can be its own radius server or you can point to another server, using port 1812 and 1813 (for reporting)

Good Luck.

Tom

Hey Punk, you rock. Nice write-up!

First off, the best way to secure a wireless router is to turn it off. :-) That being said, there are steps you can take to make it more secure.

WEP is the older style of wireless encryption, and has been cracked already, so it's useless. WPA is the newer version, and you'll want to go with WPA2.

As far as encryption, I'd go with AES: it's 256-bit encryption and it would probably take 'til the next millenium to crack.

For a home implementation, you don't need to concern yourself with RADIUS server or port settings; I would go into more detail, but it's not necessary. Just leave it alone.

Shared Key is probably a setting to allow all wireless users to use the same encryption key. For a home setting, you shouldn't need to implement this and, really, it would make it easier for someone to compromise your wireless router, so I'd leave it alone / disable it.

Key Renewal, however, is important; I believe this specifies the interval that a certain encryption key stays in use before another one is generated. A good rule of thumb on this setting would be to take a real good guess as to how much time you spend on your wireless, on average; that will make a decent renewal interval and shouldn't affect the performance of your browsing.

To change the settings on your wireless router, you will have to connect to it through your web browser using the address of the router. If you haven't connected to it before in this manner, then the default address shouldn't have changed, and should be 192.168.1.1 (which is the default for most routers I've seen). If you have connected to it before and changed the IP address, then you need to browse to the changed one instead. In either case, you're putting the address in the address bar of your favorite web browser and browsing, just as you normally would.

From that web interface, you should be able to set all of your desired settings; I can't go into specifics because I use a Linksys Wireless router (and I turned the wireless off), but you should be able to find the settings relatively easily.

Forget WEP. Use WPA2-PSK and a strong password. You might even be able to use MAC addresses to limit what computers can connect to this router. There usually is a setup item for WiFi security which will let you edit and enter the machine list by MAC address.
