Yes you have to be a great athlete to make it pro but there are things that the pros do to make themselves better.

Drills drills drills. Pylometrics i think may be the term especially for this.
-ever heard of the "box drill?" you literally jump over a set of boxes that gradually get higher and higher.


There is also a special set of "jumping shoes" that are extra large and train the calf muscles. I think they're called jumping shoes... they might be called moon shoes or something else.

Either way, to jump higher, train your calf muscles and quads and hamstrings couldn't hurt either.

The best excercises for improving your vertical leap are squats, leg presses, calf raises, jumping boxes, and stadium steps. Most importantly, you have to have the ability to jump high. A lot of people no matter how much they work at it, will never be a great vertical leaper.

They don't practice jumping. They're in the NBA because of their ability to jump that high.

first theyre taller than the average guy so they got reach. 2nd, theyre not fat so no extra weight is pulling them down. and they have lots of muscles in their thighs and calves. and they practice a lot.
