I have a pair of Levi's I'd had for about two years that are a size 7. I just bought a pair of black pants from the thrift store and they're a size 14, the maker is Moda International (I think). How is this possible, that they both fit? It's quite a difference!

Then I also have another size 29 pants I bought two years ago that are too small for me now.

Someone?

thrift store pants are in the thrift store because the sizes are messed up and plus the 14 pants could be from a different section than the7

Well, the basic difference is the clothing designer. All designers have different templates for their sizes, so a size 7 in one brand can very easily be a 9 or even an 11 in another. It can also make a difference if the clothing designer is based in America. For example, Levi's are American-made jeans, so their size 7 will be closest to the size we tend to think of as 7 in the U.S. However, Moda International is based somewhere in Europe, where they have a whole different sizing system. (That also answers your question about your size 29 jeans- in other countries they use the circumference of the waistband in inches for the size, like they do for guys' jeans here. By that rationale, the size 29 jeans you have mean they are for someone with a 29 inch waist, or approximately a size 4 here in America- no wonder they don't fit!!)
Also, it can make a difference when the jeans were made. Because women are getting more and more body-conscious every year, the designers tend to accomodate them by changing their sizing guidelines to make the sizes sound tinier and tinier. Just a few years ago I used to fit in a 3/4 at Express. They now call it a 2, which is just fine with me! Also, sizes have gone down a LOT since the 50's. Size 7 used to be what they now call a size 0.

The size 29 pants have a 29 inch waist. That would be about the same as a size 8. However there is no consistent standard for sizing. It's up to the manufacturer. There is also so much variation in cut which makes a huge difference. For example, say you are 30 inches at the waist and 39 at the hips. You could buy jeans with a 35 inch waist and if they're only 36 at the hips, they don't fit!

it depends on many factors:
-brand
-designer
-cut

I went to the store once and picked up two size 5's of the same brand but of different cuts, which I've been for the past 5 years and tried them on. One was falling off of me a bit and the other I couldn't get past my thighs (lousy inner thigh fat!). So I had to get a size 7 which was still a little too snug but I still wear them anyways because I refuse to get anything higher than a 7. I know I'm nuts.

Also, sometime washing them and wearing them a lot could play a role. Jeans shrink after you wash them and throw them in the dryer after a while. It's a good idea not to throw them in the dyer at all if you want them to fit for a long time. And if happen to have that favorite pair of jeans you wear every chance you get, they could get stretched out on one of your "bloated" days then seem too big on another.

Honestly now days I believe they label clothes with smaller sizes than they did back in the 80's. The average weight/size has increased so I think designers have adjusted their labels accordingly. I used to be a size 8 in college, now 7 years later, the same weight and height, I am amazingly a size 2. Coincidence? I think not!

Lots of different brands make their sizes different. So don't go into a store looking for a size 7, just use it as a guide line.

Unfortunately sizes vary from one brand to another. If they are foreign brand then they will run smaller. You are about a size 7/8 in American pants size. Heck don;t worry about what the size is. If you look good in them that is all that matters

there are different brands and so they will fit differently. Plus, some brands have sizes that are between 26 and about 34. Just try them on and you will be able to see which fit.

Sizes depend on the maker, the style, the department, the store, the country, the region.... there is no standard!

Frustrating huh?
