Well.. If you want something that doesn't have that 'Top 40' crap feel I'd go for some of the more mainstream indie rock bands:
Spoon (Try 'Kill the Moonlight')
Elefant (Try 'Black Magic Show')
Guster (Most of their stuff is pretty easy to get into)
Give those a try and see if you like anything.

most of the songs that people put down are soft punk, alternative and emo(hey i love that music) but for a rock band id say
