I think that it will be misprounced "I-lene" quite a bit. I live in the US on the east coast and we prounced the name with an eye sound up from.
Either way, it isn't one of my favorite names. It is different and kind of cute but not one that I would choose. I know a lady growing up with the name that was just so bitter all the time and I think that probably influences my opinions though.
You could spell it Ayleen and then it won't be mispronounced and look much "hipper" than Aileen. It is along the same lines as Ayla which I think is cute. I also like Eliana and Elana.

AILEEN
Gender: Feminine
Usage: Scottish, English
Pronounced: ay-LEEN
Variant of EILEEN
On a lot of the other sites it says to pronounce it like eye-LEEN.
I think a little girl could get picked on with this name very easily. Regardless of which way it is pronounced. I don't really care for it personally.
But it's not what I think of the name, it's what YOU think of the name. As a parent you can name your child whatever you want.

My step-sister is named Aileen and was made fun of her name all growing up. Like people saying A-leen on you and dumb stuff. So I wouldn't name her that!

I think of the song that goes " Come on Aileen" I've always liked that song and the name. It's pretty and feminine.

I would have to agree with the old lady thing... It's a pretty name, but quite old fashioned, my great-aunt and mother-in-law are both named Aileen.
