i want to by my child a video game for birhtday

Well that depends on the childs level of reality. If they can tell the difference between reality and a game, then you shouldn't really worry all too much.
It also depends on what kind of child you have. If they are more burley and like rough things, go with a battling game. If they are more into softer games stay away from rougher games.
If they are a bit younger or can't tell the difference all too well, i suggest looking at the age ratings. Some RPG's (roll playing games) are awsome, and walmart has some great ones for children.
Kindom Hearts is a RPG game that has swordplay in it but with no gore in it. Zelda games are also a good choice. If you are not sure about these games you can always research them, and look on www.youtube.com for videos of them.
Me, i grew up with very guesome games and lots of swordplay kind of stuff.

My kids have a PlayStation 2 and really enjoy the new Cars game (from the Disney movie). My 6-year old also enjoys college football, golf, jet ski, and other sports games. My 4-year old enjoys Toy Story racing. The good thing about PlayStation 2 is that you can get used games very inexpensively.

It depends on what game system they have and if it`s a boy or girl. Also, age. Boy/Girl Nitendogs ( Nintendo DS ) .
