Why is Michelle Wie going to college. Is she stupid. If someone did a financial impact study of her going to college vs her spending more time improving her golf game, they would prove that going to 4 years of university will lose her more money. Her major will be economics and she will not be phenomenal in that area so she will not help the world. What she should learn is how to embrace her talent and make money doing what she does best, marketing herself and Golf. Maybe she wants to be normal and maybe shes tired of losing to the guys.

for those of you saying education..she could hire Alan Greenspan as a tutor or read like crazy. She can educate herself and hire experts in the field. Listening to a lecture is not the greatest learning experience in the world. I like the other points though about the social aspects.

Maybe she is smart and has a contingency plan in case of injury.

Many, many "great" sports stars get hurt and never play professionally again. At least with a degree, ANY degree, from Stanford she will be able to work for the rest of her life.

Makes her seem smarter to me.

So you're saying that Stanford accepts jocks therefore they admit people who are not intelligent? Not even going to dignify that with a response, though I'm sure that others will. However, I will point out that when they accepted Michelle Wie they did not admit a jock, since as a professional golfer she can't play on their team. However, as an athlete she does need a fallback career option. As an intelligent human being she is going to college because she wants to use her brain, not just her athletic ability.

On another part of your argument... If people only went to college in order to earn more money, why do they offer degrees in the humanities? I would make more money if I used my BS in accounting than I will ever make using my MA in history/ historic preservation. I do this because its what matters to me.

It's possible that she enjoys to learn and seeks an eduation.

A lot of people who have already made a lot of money and are secure in their future seek other aspectts of life to better themselves, besides their respective trade.

Maybe parental pressure. Asian families are sometime strict regarding eduaction. (money isnt everything) and you can only golf for so long!

Also..In response to hiring Alan Greenspan and the smartest people in the world. Its not the same. (Alan Greenspan is not a circus clown or a prom limo..you cannot rent him out). Plus I am not sure if you have been to college or not but many go for the combination of eduaction and the experience. Meeting people, the social scene...The best four years of my life!! A lot of sheltered athletes or other young successful people lack true friends and lack the experiences of most "normal" teenagers..

I agree, there is a certain point where people with successful, uneducated careers need to take a step back and realize their own potential. For instance, the girl who plays Hermoine in Harry Potter was considering not signing on for the last two films in order to attend University. She stated that when she started with Harry Potter, she wasn't sure if she wanted to be an actress and she is still not terribly committed to the industry in general. So, she wanted to explore her education.

But, I can see other reasons. Peopel go to college not only to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to further a career, but also to intellectually explore an interest. Michelle could be highly interested in Economics. Who knows? She might win the Nobel Prize! Good for her. It's her chocie, and she is more than happy to amke it!

Some people measure success in terms of dollars earned, others it terms of their contribution to society. Many teachers teach because they love to teach not because they failed in the industry in which they teach. I know several teachers who have voluntarily taken a large pay cut to teach because they get more out of it than their higher salaries. A diploma isn't necessary in all fields but it does show a larger degree of dedication than simple googling "business." congratulations on being a millionaire, but how many other people do you know from your high school that didn't go to college, that are in your position? It doesn't work that way for everyone. perhaps you should think about giving back to the society that has given so much to you.

The goal is not the same for every person who attends college. For many people, yes, it is money. For many others, it's simply getting that college degree. I mean face it, many people go to college, beyond just the 2-year or 4-year degree and still don't earn a killing. They go to be trained in something they want to do, something they have a passion for and in the end, it's not a job that's going to make them extremely wealthy (social work comes to mind). But again, for some people, which is probably the case with her, it is to simply get that college degree. Maybe in her case its to have some sort of a semblance of a normal life for a girl her age.

It is a bit naive to think that the point of going to college is to make more money. There are lots of reasons to go to college -- including the pursuit of knowledge, to become more independent and to find a spouse that is not from your own gene pool.

If Michelle Wie got into Stanford -- I can assure you that she isn't stupid.

Perhaps golf is just a game to her. God forbid something happens to her--even a broken finger could take her out of the game if it doesn't heal correctly. Who wants to live with the idea that you have nothing to fall back on?
It could be that she truly enjoys learning and has a real desire to study economics. She should be commended for this. Not everything is about money.

Some people don't go to college to get more money from job. Others just go to fulfill a desire to learn.
