Firewire is supposed to be S400/S800 but why does SP2 lower that to S100? Also, is there any danger to a non-IT professional installing the update from microsoft (designated KB885222) to restore the speed to S400?

Quote from microsoft: "After you update your computer to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), the performance of your 1394a or 1394b FireWire devices may be greatly decreased." "This problem occurs if you connect a 1394a or 1394b FireWire device to a 1394b port. This problem occurs because Windows XP SP2 changes 1394b ports to S100 speed when you upgrade."

Why would microsoft do this to us and is there any reason to not set it back to its maximum speed?

Why did they do it, well no one really knows for sure but the going theory is that they did it becasue firewire is an Apple technology, and they wanted to slow it down so that it would look worse in comparison to Hi Speed USB. There is no reason not to restore it to its rightful speed.

Microsoft primarily slowed it down to provide for more stability in sp2. the patch however, is available for download, and as far as i am aware there are no dangers in installing it. but I really don't know why you would bother. the speed differences are hardly noticeable.
