I am 40wks & 5days with first baby. Confused on if I am going into labor.

Right now I feel constant pelvic/rectal pressure, almost unbearable, like baby is pushing down. Everytime the baby moves I get such a sharp pain in my lower stomach.Yesterday doc said it was only because I am engaged and having a large baby.

I am aching, like the worst menstrual cramps. Just started to get bad lower back pain this morning. No discharge. I also feel what I believe are contractions maybe only every 40 minutes. So confused. Is this early labor? Should I wait till they are 5 minutes apart? Should I go to the hospital now?

I recommend that you call your OB/GYN and have him check you. It is normal to feel pressure in your pelvis and back when the baby is getting close to being due. As a nurse, we try to encourage a mother to labor at home until her contracts are 5-8 mins apart and are regular intervals. It is much more relaxing to labor at home.....but dont wait too long if you have a long drive. Better safe than delivering your bundle of joy on the side of the road with a EMS operator.

That sure does sound like early labor. And it also sounds like you are going to have back contractions. Those are horrible. I had both front and back contractions. But I couldn't take the back pains any more so I got an epidural. Wait til they are 5 mins or less apart. Otherwise they will just send your right back home. Because at 40 minutes apart you are more than likely 1-2 cm dialated and most labor and delivery rooms don't put you in a room until you are at least 3 cm dialated. Plus you don't want to be in the hospital that long. Good luck and congrats.

Well your doctor will induce you if you don't go into labor. But yes, you have to wait until they are 5 minutes apart before you go in to the hospital, cause chances are they are not actually contractions if they are that far apart. I do know the pain though, and I feel horrible for you, because I had all of that with both of my kids, and it is excruciating, and annoying at the same time. But just think, if you don't go on your own in the next few days, you doctor should ask you about inducing, and all that pain will be for a very good reason(your baby)!! Good luck!!!!

Just be patient. If you go to the hospital now, they'll just send you right back home again. Wait until you're at least 5 minutes apart and consistent (at least 1 hour with strong contractions every 5 minutes) and then go.
40 minutes apart is just too long to tell if this is actually true labor or not.

Yes, this sounds like labor. My labor started as back pains for a good day before the actual stuff started.

And yes- the same muscles are involved with menstrual cramps- so it can feel like that too.

You can be in labor for up to 2 days!!!

Start making calls, and let the hospital know you may be coming in.

The doctor will ask you questions about your pain and advise you when it's time to come in. You may have several hours/ a day before the baby comes

This does sound like you are in labor, but it's up to you if you decide you want to go in now or wait a little longer. I would take a nice warm bath to relax and if it doesn't let up at all or you start to feel like bearing down or like you have to poop and can't you need to get to the hospital. You said your back hurts so you may have a back labor once you get to the hospital try to stay off of your back. you can kneel on the bed facing the back with the bed propped up to get some relief. Good luck honey!

yeah, call your doc or midwife. Sounds like labor to me, contractions ever 40 min is still far enough apart to start getting ready (get bags together, call up who you need to, ect.) Keep in mind, labor can take awhile. Try to realx as much as possible now, the hard work will come in a few hours or so.

Let us know what happens!

I agree with the others, don't wait...Call the Nurse/Doctor and they'll tell you to go the Hospital - or just go to the hospital or clinic.
Better Safe than Sorry and at 40 wks you might be way over due sounds like. You Could be having complications - breach or otherwise, you don't want any infections or Trauma...don't wait & Please update us after it's all over...Info is always good to know.

You will know when you need to go to the hospital. You know that you are getting close when you are having a hard time talking or walking thru a contraction. My labor started strong....I never had those little contractions...when you get contractions that are strong...you need to go! Be careful...listen to your body...don't go every time you feel a twinge....you will be sent home. Good luck and congrats! And please give a comment when you have the baby!!!

It sounds like labor to me. You should call the doctor, he'll tell you if you need to come on in or if you should wait. Good luck. If you water breaks, go to the hospital right away.
