It is sad. I always cry when I hear it. I think it is because another year has passed, and one remembers family and friends that are no longer with us. And, we realize just how quickly time passes, and we are getting older. But on the bright side, a whole new year is opening to us, with 365 blank pages for us to fill in. My we all use these days wisely and with love.

Maybe because it is reminiscing about days gone by; about old acquaintances. Remembering the old before we bring in the new. Those thoughts can sometimes make us sentimental.
Here is the Anglicized translation from Wikipedia
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and days of long ago?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for days of long ago.
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
And surely I’ll buy mine !
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for days of long ago.
CHORUS
We two have run about the hills,
and pulled the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since days of long ago.
CHORUS
We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine (dinner time) ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since days of long ago.
CHORUS
And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for days of long ago.
CHORUS

it isn't depressing it is emotional and moving,
it is about lasting Unbreakable friendship
and yes it does make me blub, but not sad.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!
And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp,
And surely I'll be mine,
And we'll tak a cup o kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!
We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine,
But we've wander'd monie a weary fit,
Sin auld lang syne.
We twa hae paidl'd in the burn
Frae morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin auld lang syne.
And there's a hand my trusty fiere,
And gie's a hand o thine,
And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught,
For auld lang syne
Happy new year

Most ppl are drunk and emotionally charged when singing this tune.
I find it rather hypocritical that we pretend to discharge all our petty problems with those who we would link arms. Then the next day the machine of hate ,spite and jealousy cranks up for another annus horribilis.
Jesus christ ..am I really this morbidly cynical?

It's not depressing, if it makes you feel emotional for the year that's past, what's wrong with that? Society is generally very cold and if it brings a tear to your eye then personally I think there's nothing wrong with that!

the music medely behind the song. I feel that way with the Titanic song, "My heart will go on" by Celine Dion. It's the whole atmosphere and mood of the song.

I don't know but I cry every time I hear it sung.
I think that's part of the reason I don't go out on New Year's anymore...everyone is singing and I'm crying.
LOL

It should! But on the flipside, it's a song that reminds us to celebrate and remember the good times and forget the bad.
