He'll probably cut down of formula because the cereal fills him up so he needs less of it.

You can start with sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, etc. Just go down the baby food aisle and pick out the ones you'd like to start with.

Babies are designed to live on breast milk (or formula) alone for even up to 1 year of life. That being said, many parents wish to, as you have introduce soft foods for variety and your infant's practice at somewhere near 5-6 months. Those parents who attempt to introduce spooned solids much earlier often find that their child is not developmentally ready as they spit the food out. This is not a reflection of distaste for food, rather a protective reflex, reminding the caregiver that thier child does not have the coordination necessary to amass a bolus of food and swallow. Believe it or not, the steps involved in swallowing solids vs sucking liquids is quite different. There is no magic or serious mystery to those foods sold for infants at this age. Remember, just a few things. 1) No chunks until they have enough teeth to chew, 2) Introduce only one every week or so, and no mixed varieties until each individual fruit or veggie has been tested, this avoids concern over allergies should one arise, 3)Vegetables are typically recommended first only because the fruits do taste better and vegetables may be rejected if he/she gets a liking for the sweet stuff, 4) The only difference between stage 1 and 2 foods by most store prepared brands is amount given. You can save money by buying stage 2 foods and refrigerating the leftovers until the next sitting, or even saving more money by food processing your own in a blender and storing them only briefly in the fridge to avoid spoiling. To directly answer your question, carrots and squash are yellow and orange and again are reasonable places to start.
Hope that helps

My son loved sweet potatoes and carrots. He didn't have a problem digesting anything, and I started him at 4 months. Every baby is different, so don't listen to the people or 'experts' that say your kid is too young.

carrots, squash

My doctor told me to start w/ fruits because it's easier for the baby to digest. I started w/ bananas & applesause.

I have also heard people say to start w/ vegetables so the baby won't get to used to the sweet foods.

I honestly don't think it matters-- everyone will have a different story to tell.

My baby is now 9 months old & he has never rejected any food I put in his mouth. He likes it all- fruits, vegetables, meats-- everything:)

1) 5 months is too young for solids. I could list all of the medical associations that agree with me, but I am sick of it. They are all here:

http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/delay-solids.html

2) Sweet potatoes and carrots are extremely hard to digest. Have you never seen a hunk of them in your poo, particularly when you are sick? Seriously. My baby loves carrots, still doesn't digest them properly and he is 9.5 months

3) Don't bother with baby food, just feed your baby table food. If your baby is READY for solids they will be able to feed themselves. Go read this site:
