recitation class is not just a rehash of the lecture but an opportunity for the students to grapple with problems they may not thoroughly understand, to broaden their knowledge of concepts understood the first time, and to give them some practice in applying the things they have learned.

At many universities the lectures are large and students don't have an opportunity to ask many questions.

The recitations are done with smaller groups -- so the students can get more individual attention. In addition, in math or science classes, time can be spent working out solutions to problems, rather than spent on theory (which is usually done in the main class).

During normal class hours you cannot ask any questions. The purpose of recitation is to discuss with the TA the parts of the lecture that you could not understand. Also the TA will probably derive the equations or theorems.

Patience & perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear & obstacles vanish. Not a scripture but a positive note. Nice to see you back;)

Its to get you used to making speeches in front of people and to get rid of your stage fright if you have any. Also, it teaches you many things. It also builds up your self-esteem like the person before me said. Hope that helps.
