Orlando to the keys is a VERY long drive. You're talking about 5-6 hours. It is well worth the trip if you want to go. There's lots to see and do, so I'll give you a few pointers. First of all, take the Florida Turnpike all the way...
1) Excellent restaurant on Key Biscayne (Miami) - The Rusty Pelican, left side of Key Biscayne as soon as you arrive on the island. If you pass the Miami Seaquarium, then you passed the Rusty Pelican. Dinner is about $30-$40 per person, so this is a little high end but well worth it. there's plenty of other lower end restaurants, so don't let this turn you off from going.
2) Do breakfast on Miami Beach (South Beach) at one of the sidewalk cafe's and watch the sun rise, do some people watching, walk on the beach and watch the cruise ships go in & out of the Port of Miami at the south end.
3) Take the drive down through the keys and stay in Key Largo a day. Do a day-trip at John Pennekamp State Park...snorkeling, diving or canoeing.
4) Go south to Bahia Honda Key and take a break on the beach at Bahia Honda State Park. Beautiful views from the top of the old train bridge there.
5) Cross the bridge south to Big Pine Key where the smallest deer lives in North America (Key Deer). They're the size of a small dog.
6) Go west (to the right, past the Island's only grocery store) on Big Pine Key to the "Blue Hole". You'll see native Florida wildlife around this freshwater hole inhabited by alligators. You'll get a good closeup view of alligators there.
7) Drive south on US1 to Key West and for an inexpensive stay, stay at the Holiday Inn on the right immediately as soon as you enter the island. If you go deeper into the island, you're looking at paying higher prices.
8) Watch US Navy aircraft fly off from the NAS Key West Air Station just east of the island.
9) Get your photo taken at the "Southernmost point" in the continental US.
10) Drop in at the "Turtle Kraals" restaurant, have some conch chowder and visit some sea turtles in their pens on the docks. Then visit the Hemingway Museum or Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville Restaurant on Duval Street.
11) Go to Mallory Square for the Sunset.
12) If you have time near Orlando, visit the Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral. Find out if there's a shuttle or missile launch before you go and you could see something cool!

It's a considerable drive from Orlando to the Keys - and I've heard that there's not actually that much there. (Key West was once the home of a large gay population, not sure if it still is).
May month will be quiet. You could go to Clearwater, St Pete's beach, treasure island beach (about 2 hours from Orlando east), do Bush Gardens (Tampa) or go west to Cocoa Beach and include Kennedy Space Centre. All are very large beaches with miles and miles of sand.
Don't forget, if you're driving in Florida, there are some long distances to drive, with little to see as it's so flat. The drive can be very boring.

Here's what my family does when we go back home from being stationed in Belgium, first we go to a nice town called Melbourne (where I was born) FL. Next we go down to Miami, and then to Key West.( Key West is not a Kid Friendly atmosphere especially Duval street). And lastly we go back to Orlando.

Yes. I recommend that you visit St. Augustine, about 1 hour away from Orlando. There is a beach and many hotels to chose from. Everybody will find something to do there, from ghost tours, to shopping and Ripleys Believe it or not.
Clearwater is nice to , with a beach. There are many shops along the beach and is a great place for couples to spend a few days.
