Congenital only means that it was present at birth but does not suggest inheritance from other family members or point to any cause. Hydrocephalus, congenital or acquired, is caused by either too much production of spinal fluid in the center part of the brain or, more commonly a blockage to normal circulation of spinal fluid around the brain or decreased absorption. This fluid, known as CSF, bathes the brain and provides a little fluid barrier around the brain. Common causes of the "blockage" type are connections between the inside and outside of the brain being too narrow, some infections, and some more complicated abnormalities with brain development. Acquired causes, meaning started with hydrocephalus AFTER birth, can be tumors, cysts, abscesses which block normal flow or debris from bleeding inside the head relating to premature birth, traumatic birth or other head injury. Another, albeit uncommon cause of acquired hydrocephalus is too much vitamin A.
