The original homeland of the Iroquois was in upstate New York between the Adirondack Mountains and Niagara Falls. Through conquest and migration, they gained control of most of the northeastern United States and eastern Canada. At its maximum in 1680, their empire extended west from the north shore of Chesapeake Bay through Kentucky to the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers; then north following the Illinois River to the south end of Lake Michigan; east across all of lower Michigan, southern Ontario and adjacent parts of southwestern Quebec; and finally south through northern New England west of the Connecticut River through the Hudson and upper Delaware Valleys across Pennsylvania back to the Chesapeake.

haudenasaunee (iroquois) is actually a confederacy of 6 nations. our clans are family groupings. my nation (mohawk) has 3 clans others have the same 3 as us plus more, as many as 8 total. there is no symbols associated with the clans aside from what the clan is. and its not determined by location. we are the clan our mothers are. if your mother is not native with a clan, then neither are you. we trace family through our mothers, not our fathers. one can still be enrolled in our nations with a non native mother but you will not have a clan. and all clans live in the same communities, so as i said, location will not help you. the ONLY way to determine native ancestry is to gather documents like birth certificates etc and trace your family back to an enrolled tribal member. without that, you are not native. there must be a paper trail and if you actually do have native ancestors, you won't have any trouble finding it. we are the most heavily documented people on the planet.
