The thing to do on your car ride is just take in the scenery - it's the most breathtaking in the US. It's hard to beat the scenery anywhere in Southern Colorado/Northern New Mexico, but the backroads are well worth the extra time - although coming from Durango you are guaranteed a lot of those.

A little north from Durango is Ouray, a tiny town with great hot springs.

You will also find a number of hot springs on the way down through NM, check your map - Ojo Caliente is about two and a half hours north of Albuquerque and Jemez is about an hour and a half north.

Also check out Chaco Canyon in NM - spectacular. Stop in Santa Fe for a little upper crust Southwestern culture, tons of art and fabulous restaurants, Taos for a bit more of the authentic Southwest and Native American cultures, and more fabulous food.

Be sure to stop at a local restaurant along the way and sample the chili - green or red or both, and by all means, don't miss Navajo bread or sopapillas.

As for weather, expect snow - especially on the passes. There's no real way to predict weather in that part of the country or when it will hit, so you will just have to check all the conditions before you drive or fly. Both the Colorado and New Mexico Depts. of Transportation are pretty diligent about updating conditions on their websites. Plus, ask any local - they're always the best source of information.

Have a great trip!
