Do these need any lighting to grow, the only light they really get is from the tiny lightbulb over the tank that does not do much and from the window, so I am not sure what to do because I can't put it on the window sill or anything because my betta will die since they can't be in direct sunlight.

Someone gave you bad info. My daughter has had a betta in a vase with a plant in the top of the vase (with the roots hanging into the vase) in her windowsill for over a year. The only thing wrong with the arrangement is that the extra light causes algae.

Curious George...you're giving the wrong info as well. It's never a good idea to put ANY type of fish into those "specially made" vases for fish. They can't breathe well. No they don't need light to grow but make sure you keep the room at normal room temperature, not too hot and not too cold. My sister swears by this betta site: www.bettatalk.com

It should give you more info :)

if bettas needed any special type of light to grow then they probably wouldn't sell Betta Bowls. I have four Bettas all in individual bowls (for now). One I have had for quite some time. He is as happy as can be, eats regularly, and stays in a dim part of the room.

He is now pusking three inches long (not including tail). He is VERY healthy. Never had a disease in his life. I keep him in a 2.5 gallon bowl. He has never had any special lighting.

Dont worry about him. He'll be perfectly happy without a lot of light.

Yes, the plants grow fine under normal aquarium lighting if the bulb is good. Generally, if it sinks, it should be good. If it floats, you got a bad one. Every so often, you can get a bad sinker.
