I can tell you why soccer is popular, but I don't have an answer for why it's not popular in the US.
Soccer has been around for a long time, and is actually a very interesting and exciting game. It's much like hockey, or even football. People can get hurt, which attracts a lot of spectators. Also, other countries have had soccer teams the way we have football teams... They are full of national idols, and many people look up to the teams and players.

The real question is why is football, yes football, not popular in the US. I suppose because they never won anything at least in the man's game. And in general, US society is so chauvinistic, being the best in the world in the women's game is not very important. Football is more skillful than American football and the players have to be fitter. They play for 90 minutes and don't keep getting swapped out to rest if they run 20 yards. Of course all the armor plate doesn't help! I believe it has to do with the American thing about bigger is better. Most of the monsters who play American football would suffer cardiac arrest if they tried to play real football.

It's a sport that everyone can play. You don't need expensive equipment since all you need is a ball, some open space, and players, unlike some other sports like golf, polo, american football, and even baseball, though to a lesser extent. In most countries where it is popular it was the first sport to be played professionally in that country in which case being a fan gets passed down from generation to generation as young people watch their fathers following the sport.
