I will be living in an apartment complex that has WiFi for it's tenants. I have a desktop computer and have no idea what I would need to be able to access the internet. Can anyone help me?

Yes. You will need to buy a wireless PCI card or a USB wireless adapter. The PCI card you need to install into your PC and open up the case. The USB you just plug it in. With the CD just install the drivers then you will need to set it up to access their wireless network. Usually this means entering in a passcode (WEP key). Talk to whoever set up the wireless in your apartment and they should give you this information so it will connect.

There are several types of adapters available. A 802.11b only connects at 11mbits which should be fine for accessing the internet, but the next notch up is called 802.11g and doesn't cost much more. It also can use newer security functions if your apartment's network is set up for 802.11g WPA security. Also the 802.11g is fully compatible with the "b" type network as well.

All you need to do is go to Wal-Mart and buy your a Wireless Card for a Desktop, or you can take it into a computer shop and have them install one for you, they run about 30 bucks. If you want to do it yourself go buy one. Then open up the back panel of your computer then you will see some slots that is were you'll be plugging it in at. Take out the screw and remove the slant there or pop it out depends on your computer. Then you will need to remove the antenna from the card they will unscrew. Then place the card into the open hole. Then reinsert the screw. Close the computer and then put the antenna back on the card. Turn on your computer and then run the software. After that you will restart your computer and that is the installtion process. All you'll need to do is get the password if it has one and then connet up to it. Hope this helps. There are step by step instructions in the box if you get a belkin or linksys.

You would need a wireless adapter. You can find a USB Wireless adapter at any computer store, Best Buy, Circuit City, COMPUSA, Office Depot . . . . The list is endless. If you don't have any USB ports on your computer, you can buy a PCI card that you can install in the motherboard. This is an option, but not a good one. Good luck.

You need a wifi adapter for the desktop, it comes in either a pci-expansion card or a usb stick, both of which do the same thing. They both cost around the same too, $50 us or so.

you will have to purchase a wireless PCI card or a wireless USB adapter and install them. The USB adapter is far easier since you dont have to open up your computer case to install it. Ask your apartmrnt manager what maker they suggest using and goto your local computer/electronics store and get it.

Hello there,

Talk with your landlord. You probably only need a wireless card; any 802.11b or g should work.

Then, you may need to know the SSID and WEP or WPA key. That you would get from your landlord. You may need to sign an agreement.

Tom
