I've just read a question on here asking whether the actor Tim Curry is gay. Some of the answers are more than a little bit defensive along the lines of: 'Why does that matter?' It doesn't! Nobody said it did. They were just asking.
Why does it cause such a big reaction if someone even enquires as to someone's sexuality? It's only a question. Nobody said it makes them a worse person or lessens their talents or place on the planet so why do some people immediately get their heckle up? Isn't it only the same as enquiring if someone has a girlfriend or husband etc.? As in, it's none of our business but just out of curiosity.....

It doesn't matter. That's not my question. The question is: why do people find it so offensive to even enquire about it?

bctpm - nice try and I get your drift but your questions are posed in a far more leading way than a mere enquiry. It's not quite the same thing is it?

I presume, from the phrasing of the question that you used, and also one of the answers about the Cat, that you're referring to my question?
Well, I don't know why people reacted the way they did to it.
Myself, I was only asking the question because I'm curious as to what people think about different subject matters. I didn't expect the reaction that it got, and I was quite ashamed that it became that way.
I definitely don't react to anything about sexuality because, although I hate labelling myself, I'd say that I'm Bisexual, and I'm quite comfortable with it.
Maybe people who react that way are Bisexual, Gay or Lesbian and have had bad experiences in the past. Or, maybe they think that it doesn't really matter, and that people shouldn't ask about those kinds of things.
Maybe it just offends them because they consider it to be quite personal, even if the question isn't about them.
I don't like the various Gossip Magazines, about who's going with who, or whatever, although I have read them in the past. I don't particularly care about anything that anyone gets up to. That's their business.
However, I'm just curious by nature, and as I said with my question, I just wanted to find out if anyone definately knew the answer. It's just one of those things that I wanted to learn about.
I agree with some of the answers to my question, and with some of the ones here, it's none of my business what people do. And it shouldn't matter, either.
It isn't, and it doesn't.
But, I was asking questions, which I thought was the whole point of this place.

i understand what you are trying to say here. considering that just recently the bloke who played dougie houser md, came out of the closet, alongside lance bass of nsync and TR knight the black actor from that US drama, grey's anatomy.
as for why some people find it offensive when people ask such a question, well maybe its because that unlike people who are not famous and are indeed celebs, such as us, they have a higher profile to maintain, they are in the public eye and are constantly in the press and media; plus a lot of their fans and admirers look up to them as potential rolemodels or stars.
whenever someone asks a question or enquires whether a celebrity is gay or not, people react as if it is something that is major when its not. but some of the responses vary between being shocked to the downright ignorant and bigoted. i think people ask just to clear up any misunderstandings and because some are confused as to whether their idol is homosexual or not.
it depends on how famous that celebrity is also. if its a celeb who you are not familiar with, then its not really that much of a shock because you couldn't care less. but if its a celeb that everyone knows and you are familiar with, then people's reaction will be of shock at their decision to come out. but then again what has their sexuality got to do with it? or to be precise why should it be any of our business to know who that person sleeps with or goes out with, particuarly if the celeb is male and he is dating a male and a woman is going out with another woman. some of my favourite celebs are gay- though frankly, all i care about is their work and regardless of whether it is an actor, singer, performer whatever- rather than their sexual orientation. its no big deal to me.

~I don't think it matters at all. What I want to know is, what gives with your avatar? A guy with bulging, bloodshot eyes, bags hanging like udders, a bloated face and wearing a black chadra! Is that religious cross dressing or just a show of support for martyrdom? I'm not trying to get your heckle up and I know it's none of my business, but I'm just asking out of curiosity.

i understand where you are coming from, but i think some people are just about coming to grips about people's sexuality ie. being gay. it used to be frowned apon but i'm glad that it has finally being excepted as being a natural part of life. i think it causes big reactions a) that hetrosexuality is alot more common than being gay and b) that the person had the courage to tell that they are coming out.
hope it helps and, good question.

i know what you mean, some people think that because you ask if someone's gay, you are automatically dissaproving if the answer is yes. and, very often, i like the answer to be yes, coz i like gay men, they are so much better than normal men! lol... lots of times i ask if a celebrity is gay because they seem nicer than your average straight one! besides, nowadays no one cares whether someone's gay or not, and even those who dissaprove are too scared to say so because they know people will frown upon them for being judgmental!

A lot of people tend to take it badly when you ask about people's sexulaity, and I can't really understand it.
I ask people if they are straight or gay all the time - it doesn't make a blind bit of difference wether they are gay - I just want to know as I'm nosey!

I agree, so many people are really rude on here when people want an honest simple answer. The get stupid replys that is usually really horrible... there is completely no reason for people to reply in that way!

no one likes the light shinned on themselves
people want to be left alone to conduct their own wickedness in the dark - in private - where they won't be subjected to scrutiny
BUT... keep in mind that the expectation of privacy disappears when you leave your house
SO... if you live in the public eye, get over the exposure and take the bad with the good
