i have custody, they are there to see him for christmas! he has been at work during the day and leaving them, i dont leave them alone together, they fight like cat and dog! i cant see the point of him having them if he is guna leave them to go to work. i have to work too but i have proper child care! they dont see him much (his choice) so when they do i think he should have quality time with them, and no they are not happy with the situation, and they are both boys

I had reason to contact the NSPCC many years ago and their recommendation then was that is was not advisable to leave a child in the care of anyone under 16, however, that is not fixed in law.
The other point, which I have every sympathy with is, if they are there to spend time with their father why is he working and not spending precious time with them? They are there to see him and not be at his home alone! Waste of time them being there when they could be spending time with their own friends. Sounds like the time is coming where he's going to have to learn that as they get older their needs are even more paramount and that wil include them spending more time with their mates and less with him, especially as he isn't there when it is 'his' time.

Well ... the 14 year old should be able to watch an 8 year old just fine. If the has to work, then he doesn't have a choice in the matter.
As long as he's taking care of them, why are you so upset. Its not like he's leaving them alone to go and hang out with his friends or other women for that matter -- the man is working woman!
Plus, getting some responsiblies at an early age won't scar your children, it will only help them become better adults when they get older ... so I think what he's doing is awesome :D
Leave him alone and let him be a father for heavens sakes
Geee weeezzz .... talk about a bat out of hell ....

I sometimes have to leave my 15 year old with my 7 and 9 year old. As a working single parent i have no choice.i don't leave them overnight and i am always just a phone call away. And i always tell my neighbour so they know to pop in if needed. There are no rules about leaving children alone but if the 14 year old is mature enough and knows wot to do in an emergency then there is no problem. Also remember some teenagers are mature at 14,some aren't!!
I'm sure you husband wouldn't leave them if he wasn't sure of ther safety. But as it sounds like you don't leave them alone then i suggest you have a word with your estranged husband and tell him how you feel.
Good luck and Happy New Year

In England there is no firm law on the matter. It all depends on whether the circumstances would be considered 'neglect'. Leaving 4 year olds alone is probably only ok for a few minutes, seven year olds for a bit longer, nine year olds longer still, eleven year olds can probably be in a house alone (after school etc.), 13 year olds babysit, but leaving a 14 year old overnight might well be neglect, going on holiday and leaving a fifteen year old alone might in some circumstances be neglect.
All of this depends on the circumstances.

If you live in Illinois, 14 years old is the youngest that can be left alone or caring for children. In Maryland, 13 is the age. According to the website below, Illinois and Maryland are the only states with laws about this, so unless you live in Maryland, it looks like your husband isn't breaking any laws. There are guidelines for other states listed on the website I have given below, but you'd need to look up what state you reside in and how it affects your situation. Good luck!

I dont see why not. At 14 you can babysit so why couldnt a 14 year old and an 8 year old stay home? I think maybe the reason your not happy about it has something to do with the estranged husband, not the children. 14 is plenty old enough to stay home alone.

You may not be happy with the situation but I doubt there is a law that says you can't leave a 14 year old home alone. You have 11 year olds that babysit!

Yes, if he thinks that the 14 year old is resposible enough to look after a younger sibling then there is no problem and its legal. I'm sure the babysitting age in England is 13, but Scotland is 16

Check with your state as the age to leave teens alone may vary, but having an older teen supervise a younger child may be a separate issue...I do not think kids that age should be left alone during an adult's entire work day...

The laws vary from state to state. The 14 year old seems old enough to handle the situation. I was a latch-key kid at age 9! I'm fine. No bad experiences.
