As with all engine problems, no one can fix it unless the light stays on. Until the check engine light stays on constantly the problem can not be diagnosed, but only guessed at. Even if it happened before, it may be something different, and a fortune can be spent trying to fix it.
I would take it to a local parts store like Autozone or whatever is in your area and have a code reader hooked up to it just to see if some malfunction has been recorded. If no codes come up, don't worry about it until the light stays on constantly, then you can diagnose it and fix it.

The first step is to get the code checked by either a dealer or anyone else with a scanner that is GM capable. The number of the code determines which part of the computer monitored system is causing the problem. This could be any number of motor or transmission sensors. Since it seems to be speed related, you might be looking at something related to the transmission? It is very hard to say what as there are quite a few codes that the computer could store and I don't want to scare you with a poor diagnosis here.

If the light came on, it stores a code in the computer even if it goes out again. You need to get the code before you can even begin to diagnose it. Go to autozone and they will get the code for free or find someone with a code scanner. Could be something simple but it could also be something like a bad fuel pump because what you are describing is a common symptom when they start going. I'd get it checked out before it leaves you stranded.

Emissions problem is triggering one of the sensors indicating some engine parameter is out of range.
Simple things to try before getting a diagnostic.
1. Tighten up gas cap.
2. Make sure Air filter is clean, and replace if necessary.
If check engine light is still on, then you'll need to get the engine diagnosed to determine which sensor is detecting the problem.

i agree with the few who said get it checked. no auto parts store can check the code if the check light is off. you'll have to spend the $40-50 to have a dealer pull up a "soft" code. It's held in memory. "hard" codes set the light. nobody on this site can diagnose this problem unless they guess.
the dealer can at least tell you what's wrong and proceed from there.

i have a 97 dodge stratus that i got from my brother and my check engine light comes on and stays on for like 2 or 3 weeks straight. my brother is a mechanic and he told me not to worry about it. Some cars do that alot. my best advice to u is to ask a mechanic u kno and see what he has to say. but since u have an old car like mine i wouldnt worry so much about it
