mocked when people say marriage is "just a piece of paper" and it is not necessary for one to be in a committed relationship? I do. I believe that unmarried individuals who claim to be in a committed relationship because they believe marriage is "just a piece of paper" do not have a committment at all. In fact, it is the polar opposite of a committed relationship because one party can walk out whenever they want with no legal obligations or consequences. The next time you buy a house, at the closing, tell the broker that you don't need to sign any papers because you are going to make your payments on time at the agreed upon interest rate until the loan is paid off. See how far the it's "just a piece of paper" argument gets you. What are your thoughts?

I agree with you - most try to make it a "moral" argument, but it's really not. It's a question of societal norms, and the raising of family as well. My husband said he was feeling the most free when we got married, because he could totally be himself. So marriage is not the noose around the neck at all, not with a mature relationship. I believe those who make the "just a piece of paper" argument are not wanting to face up to the reality of life - and may not want that deep commitment, or be capable of it.
I love your example of the house buying - it's spot on....

I don't feel mocked at all and I don't believe two people need to be married by a church or state to be committed to one another. I disagree with you on them not having any legal consequences. If they have children or jointly own any assets together than there are legal obligations. Some states have common law marriages. People have their own personal reasons for not wanting to get married. It's not my business why or why not so I don't judge. Sorry you feel mocked by someone not choosing the same path as you.

The people who say it is just a piece of paper just do not understand. I think they are just afraid to make the decision to marry. It is easier to walk away when you are not married. They take the easy way. I know it is more than a piece of paper. I dont feel mocked. I feel sorry for the ones that say it.

I think people who say that are either unhappy with they're marriage or just really want to be married. Making a commitment in front of God and your family and friends isn't just a get together right? I really don't think its mockery, I think it's jealousy or immaturity.

HI!

I agree. Marriage has lost its meaning in society today. Everyone thionks living together and trying things out will make for a secure marriage and it is not so.

I think there should be classes on marriage and children.

I do not worry about other peoples opinions on the subject, they have their reasons, I am just to in love with my hubby to worry about if they think we should be hitched or not, he and I are happy and that is all that matters
