My neighbor built without permits from the city, a patio room over his existing patio. The problem I have is that is thus encloses one of the kids bedrrom windows. The kids window now opens up to a patio room, not to the outside. This is unsafe in the event of a fire yes? It just bugs me, what do you think I should do. The room is done already btw.

You should report it because while a lot of people are saying it's not your business and let it go the city will catch up to them there could be a fire and the child dies. Because why? You looked the other way. And then what kind of Karma would that be but BAD karma coming back on you. Not to mention the guilt that would bring you because you could have saved that child's life.

You said one of the windows. Does that mean he still has one window? many homes have bedrooms with only one window, some with one. Also what if your neighbor lived in a 20 story building. Is the kid going tojump out of the window in the event of a fire?

Personally I think it doesn't concern you. I also live in an area as do most people where the local, county, state, and federal government sticks their noses into every corner of our lives.
Do you know that many cities have building inspectors who are hires on theri willingness ot accept lower salaries or are hired because they are family or friends and have no building experience.
Most building inspectors have no idea of how to do their jobs or attempt to. It's all the money and how much they can get from home owners. (even when contractors are hired the home owner pays)
If you informed on owner you could cost him a larg esuime in inspection fees, cause him to be fined, have to tear down his new patio and hir esomeone else to do the same job maybe with less workmenship and much more cost.
You would certainly lose a neighbor.
You might tell him o fyour concern for his child, but other than that stay out of it.
He might in fact be legal and you don't know it. I have bed rooms in my house with only one window, and consider it my business.

Are you kidding me??? How could you NOT report this knowing that the child may die in a fire because of this??? When it comes to safety, too many people look the other way.......SPEAK UP. Make an anonymous call or send a note to the bldg. dept. of your town telling them of the situation.

I don't think it is really your place to call and report him to the city. He knows what he is doing. You can always try to talkto your neighbor but i think if you call the city on him that will just start neighborhood drama. If he owns the house he can do what he wants as long as it isn't affecting you.

The city will catch up with him and then fine him so I would mind my own business if I were you

why r u thinking in the worse???? be optimistic... there will be no fire don't worry and don't be selfish, obviously he needed that extra space, don't ruin it for him, plus put urself in his place, i don't think u would like it if he reported u, be nice.. nice will come back to u!
