The same difference as between 'america' and 'usa'.
But the rest of us will use capitals.

No real difference except I believe Great Britain refers only to the administrative union of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom includes all overseas holdings including Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands.

Great Britain is the collective term for Wales England and Scotland.

The U.K is the United KIngdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

So the difference is Northern Ireland.

I think you people covered it well. It all started with the expansion of the British Empire. As the Brits were slowly beaten back to there island in the water the empire dissolved. Leaving Ireland, Scotland, and Great Britain (or some refer to it as England). The U.K. encompasses the islands off of mainland Europe.
