Make sure there are no 802.11B devices on the network. If you can, disable 802.11B and only use 802.11G in the router.

wireless signal strength is determined by -
The output power of your wireless signal of your wireless router, The distance from your wireless router or access point to your computer.
Any barriers in between like walls.
Interference from other signals like wireless or cordless.
The quality of your wireless adapter.

Some wireless routers have the option to increase wireless output strength.
You can try changing the channel in the wireless setup. Most wireless has channels 1 through 11. each channel is a slightly different frequency and other wireless signals as well as some high frequency cordless phones operate in some of those frequencies and can interfere.
You can move things around to get closer or a clearer path between the 2.
You can get a high gain wireless antena.
You can get a wireless signal booster or repeater.
Try this one though... get a small size pringles can. put it over your antenae on your wireless router. you know the pringles can upside down so the foil metal inside is touching the end of your router antena. It actually works alot of the time.

As far as 54 or 108 etc.. those are just the diff standard speeds. 54 wireless g 108 is super-g or hyper-g et..

Hope that was useful.

You may want to invest in high gain antennas. Dell is not the best computer out there they don't play nice with wireless internet. Some high gain antennas should help and also may want to try wall antennas they work really well you just plug them into the wall and it extends the internet.

Apple makes this thing, AirPort Express Base Station with AirTunes, you just plug it in and it connects to your home network. it will expand the router's range and will let you connect to your network

Ours consistently says 54 Mbps on my computer and 108 Mbps on my husband's computer. For us it seems to be more related to the speed of the computer than the wireless itself. And where the computer is in the house doesn't make any difference.
