I went through device manager and it doesn't show up, when i click volume control it says " There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to Vontrol Panel, click Printers andOther hardware and click add hardware." that doesn't help.

If you had a sound card installed then the installer may have disabled the onboard sound in the bios

to get into your bios click on the f10 or delete key on some machines maybe f1 while booting up

once inside your bios look around for settings for onboard audio and click to enable
do not change any other settings if you are new to the bios as could cause problems

Hey Dude,

Many times you have to enable the onboard sound in the bios. If you put in a sound card, it will disable it.

Now, sometimes, the IRQ and DMA get stompted on by a modem. If you do not have an onboard modem, I would remove it. If you do, I would remove it from the device manager, reboot, turn on the onboard audio in the bios, reboot, and let the devices discover themselves. Other than that, and possibly a bad onboard sound card, there is not much more you can do.

oh wait, sometimes moving pci card slots helps. Some pci slots share IRQ and DMA numbers with onboard devices. Cheap, I know. You would only know that by reading the motherboad manual; not many do that. I am sort of a freak about that.
