They are 2 goldfish and we have only had them for less than 20 hours. I fed them the correct food, and we used their own water along with a supplement to help take out the chlorine of the tap water. Now they are only on the top of the water and breathing there. They have been doing that for at least a couple hours now and before they were swimming near the bottom. Are they just hungry, or are they having trouble breathing?

Sounds like you need a an air pump. Gold fish put off a lot of waste and all fish get a little shocked when transported. If the store you bought them just got them in recently then that's twice the trauma. I put a little sea salt in my tank. Goldfish like a little salt and it helps keep disease down also. They could have been sick when you got them. Most stores will let you replace them (if they die, and we hope they don't) within so many hours if you keep the receipt and bring the dead fish back. Also I never feed my fish for 24 hrs. after I buy them and don't suggest using the transport water in a new tank or as little of it as possible.I prfer flake food over pellet because of the waste also. Good Luck.with them.

Sounds like either shock/stress or lack of oxygen. Suggestion of an airpump with tubing fed to airstones would be the solution at first thought. Check the capacity of your aquarium and find an airpump to suit it's needs. Did you have the aquarium set up for at least a week prior to introducing the fish? I'd always do that and introduce fish slowly. Also try checking your water parameters - you can get a test kit from your local pet shop.

it somewhat is authentic that your fish is having difficulty respiration as a results of fact he's working out of oxygen. on the grounds that there isn't any bubbler or filter out in a bowl, the oxygen gets depleted quite immediately. right this is a thank you to restoration it without needing to get a sparkling aquarium. First, positioned extremely much less water on your bowl. Fill it between a million/2 and 3/4 finished. this would look counterintuitive, on the grounds that extra water could look to intend extra oxygen, yet in a bowl, you will desire to maximise the exterior component of the water so gasoline substitute can ensue extra effectively. this implies gases created via fish and their waste can get out of the water and oxygen can get in extra helpful. 2d, you will would desire to do a minimum of a partial water replace the different day and an entire water replace approximately as quickly as a week. Many places will inform you to do a partial two times a week and an entire each and every 2 weeks, yet i think of that probably basically works in case you have an excellent bowl or do not care in the adventure that your fish dies. Partial water replace: Scoop out some million/2 of the water interior the bowl (i exploit a ladle) and replace it with dealt with water of a similar temperature. I pour mine from extreme sufficient up that it gets some sturdy effervescent happening for a 2d or 2, to boost the oxygen. an entire water replace is quite self explanatory, yet please be sure you rinse the rocks on the backside nicely to get rid of as lots waste as you may.

When fish come to the top of tanks it's usually because of lack of oxygen in the water. Maybe your tank is too small. Try changing the water again and see if it helps. You may need a fish tank air pump to keep the water oxygenated, or else change the water often.

Do you have an air pump to provide oxygen? If not there is your problem. If so they may still be hungry. Try this, feed the fish all they can eat a few flakes at a time for about five minutes.

We have goldfish and when they are hungry they swim around as if looking for food. they often go down to the bottom of the tank and eat any food that may have settled in the rocks/beads. try putting one-two flakes/pellets in the tank. watch and if they swim to the top where the food is they are probably hungry. otherwise you'll probably have to ask a pet store specialist.
hope i helped.

Do you have any plants in the fish bowl? They produce oxygen during daylight. Is the water the right temperature? If you have put them in their bowl to fast they can get very sick and die. You MUST very slowly get them used to the new water even if you are using some of there old water and some experts say you shouldn't use the transport water at all.
