The trans makes a whining noise after you get up to around 35 mph. It does it in high all of the time. What might it be, and is it a major problem? It works perfectly except for the noise. It is lock up converter type trans, a 4 speed. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Ok, don't have it serviced.....you are wasting your money. What you are hearing is the torque converter. That is assuming that what you are hearing is actually in the transmission. First thing to do......take off the serpentine belt or drive belts and drive it a very short distance (alternator and water pump will not be working.....so make it very short) See if it still makes the whine. If it does, then for sure it is the torque converter. If it doesn't, then you have an external problem in something like the power steering or alternator bearing that only is noticeable at higher speeds. GOOD LUCK!

what gin and juice said, but put it on jack stands, that way you can have a buddy listen from outside, it could be the rear diff. Check the fluids and see if they are the correct level, and if the trans fluid smells burnt or is dark. BUT if it is the torque converter, changing the fluid might kill it all together. You'll lose all of the material giving you friction.

Sounds like a bearing is going out, so eventually it will fail completely. Should be replaced, but many shops do not repair anymore, they just swap out the complete transmission, as there may be other problems with a transmission this old.

When was the last time you had the transmission serviced? Have you checked tranny fluid? My first suggestion is to check the fluid. You do have to have the transmission serviced on occassion. Try both these.
