We keep diaries to write down our thoughts and feelings, because they can't all be expressed just by saying them, so writing them down is a good way to release them. You can write down anything you want in a diary, anything that is going on in your life, anything that bothers you, etc.
I personally don't keep a diary right now but I used to keep them all the time. They're really great for releasing your emotions.
I hope this answers your question!

Sometimes people keep diaries or journals as a way to "vent". Writing down emotions and feelings are a good way to keep them from being bottled up...and to supress the urge to blow up at another person causing hurt feelings.
I've even seen some who translate their problems/issues into poetry, with wonderful outcomes. Lots of writers and poets draw from personal experience. Sylvia Plath is a great example of that. Diaries are a great way to "let it all out" in private.

we keep diaries to reminisce the past, about lets say: u go out on a date and it was one of the best time of your life.So u write it in your diary because u don't want it to be forgotten.U can write things that happen every day in your life...weather its things u do, or didn't accomplish as planned,sad,happy,boring..or some sort of feeling u had of the day.Having a dairy is like having a secrete friend, with a code or a lock..cannot be known without your permission.U can curse a friend..how much u want.No one will know, just u and your diary. Its where u display your thoughts, feelings, opinions, and u don't want to say it to anyone..so u write it.Get it!Run to your secrete friend whose always have a lock. No one has to know...its like "knock!knock!Whose there? DIARY!!!!!

Diaries are often the only way for historians to get the "real" facts about a period in the past. Modern political correctness and human apathy ensure that only the approved version of daily events get recorded, so history gets distorted. Your views, thoughts and opinions will be invaluable in a few hundred years time. Samuel Pepys is a classic example.

Michael Palin's just published his and is making a small fortune out of them. So I guess there's one good reason.
Another good reason is to be able to get things that are weighing heavily on your mind out "into the open", as it were. Things never seem quite as bad when you write them down.
Yet another reason is just to catalogue certain events in your life - nothing too 'big', maybe little things like going to the beach, or going to a party. Your mind will forget the details after a period of time, but the diary will keep them forever.

We keep the diarys because sometimes we need to remember somethings about our past and wen we read the diary, perhaps we find funny experiences from the past. Sorry because my grammar, I am Mexican and I am learning English.

Diaries are like journals, you write things in them. Usually you write the topic of your day or the main interest of your day. Date it. Like 12/25/06 my grandparents were over, we opened gifts. 12.26.06, I took the sweater gram gave me back to the store, didn't like the color. 12/ 27/06 went out with sue, she was boring. Things on that line.

I keep a diary/journal so I can get my frustrations out on paper (or the computer) and then reflect on my life. Also, it's a safeguard in case I get Alzheimer's...then my hubby can read me stories about our life and help me to remember things.

We keep diaries to get our thoughts out. It's nice to vent occcaisionally. You can write anything in them. It's kind of theraputic.

Complaints, problems and emberassing thoughts.
Most people don't like listening to those, so it's best expressed in a diary.
