Computer fans and LED on MB come on. No boot, no beep codes. Do I need a new MB or video card? How can I test this?

Asus P4T
Intel Socket 423 Pentium® 4 (not sure GHZ)
All 4 memory sockets are full (RDRAM Memory)

This was a friends of mine and I don't have specifics on amount of memory or size of vid card. Vid card has ports for 2 monitors and I have tried both. As far as I know it was working fine until one day it would not start, that's all the info I have. Thanks in advance

Hey there,

Pull out all of the PCI and AGP cards. Remove the memory. Only have the CPU on the system. Only hook up the power to the motherboard. Turn on the computer. Do not plug in the monitor, network, keyboard or mouse.

Turn on the computer. Still nothing. I would check the power supply first. That would be the cheapest problem. Other than that, you have a bad CPU or motherboard. In either case, I would chuck them as a pair. No sense bringing a possible problem to another system.

The first response from Dyna.... is probably the best bet! Power supply. 80% of what I fix is power supply or hard drive related.

from what you discribe its hard to tell whats wrong.
is there any display on the video at all? if yes probably not the video card
if you turn it on does the hard drive clatter like windows is starting but you still get no video? maybe the video card, id start by unpluging the card and re pluging it.
also if you get an old video card to test it with and it still doesnt work, my guess would be power spike problems, to fix this reset the bios by either taking out the bios battery for afiew minuts or by moving the bios reset jumper to reset position then replacing.
this often makes a seemingly dead computer work, but you will need to reprogram the bios settings afterwords.

!!! you dont have to have a video card to get a beep post. Check the seating of the ram sticks if not then you either have a bad motherboard or processor. You have to switch either of them to figure out which one it is. Hell it could be both. Just take out the processor and put it back in(try to see if there is a burn smell while you taken it out) and reboot if nothing then you probably have a bad motherboard. See if you can put your processor in another motherboard to see if the processor has gone bad.

if there is a bad stick of ram...are they all 128's or 256's? take 3 of them out and leave one in bank 1. read the manual to make sure the Mboard uses RDRAM...
try replacing the bios battery ...you may want to grab the manual and double check all the jumpers on the MBoard, you can make sure the bios jumper is on the correct pins.

Probably the power supply. I know that sounds odd,, but fans can spin, but the powersupply is still bad. If not the PS, then alas it is probably the MB.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
