As far I know there is no hard and fast rule.
This exchange of surname is to make a bond between two families. When an Indian girl is married to a person her whole family gets married.
It becomes a responsibility of the husband to take responsibility of his wife from his father-in-law and to commemorate that the surname is exchanged.

it is a tradition ,but it is not a compulsion.after marriage the girl gets a new family .so she is expected to carry her husband's surname.but things r changing nowadays.today if a girl changes her surname, then its because her husband might b a famous person or a celebrity.if a girl is from a high society or a famous family and if her husband is not that popular then she carries both the names.it has become a trend.

I think it's romantic. I think it shows you're ready to begin your new life with your husband and perhaps have children at some point. All having the same name signifies that you are a family. At least that what it does for me. However, that being said, I don't think it's wrong if the woman should choose not too. I think some women are very tuned in to their identity and their name is a big part of that for some people. To each their own.

Here in England, the girl takes the man's surname, for it shows they are married, although, a lot of people that live together take the man's name. It is a sign that she is proud to be the wife, fiancee etc of that person. It makes people aware of the union they have.

Because you are all now one family. I did it especially for the future children we were going to have. There is nothing tougher on kids than having only one parent's name, a hyphenated name, a combined name, etc. It can just be a mess.
