Look into St. Jude's Children's Research Center and Hospital. That's essentially what they do. Find out how it got started, and then follow their lead. If you were going to concentrate on children, then I would just try to get as much money as possible to St. Judes, because it is already established, and could always use the money. (Better to give to an established working hospital than open a competing one.) If you're planning on opening one for all ages, then just follow their lead. Maybe you can even open one in conjunction with St. Judes.

The only way you could do that would be to find companies, grants, and rich philanthropists willing to fund you. You could always go like St. Jude and do telethons and ask for charities to keep you afloat from there.

If people were willing to do things for free there would be very little disease in the first place. Most diseases can be cured now, but they won't be, because there is no money in the cure.
