Why execute at all, this is 2006 for crying out loud can't we use our imaginations?

The perfect way to punish Saddam would have been to let him live in a small cage that was visited every day by someone who he hurt. Let them vent their rage and anger at him. let him see the tears and suffering he has caused. If was human at all this would have caused far more torment than a "short drop and a quick stop". Why he didn't even have a year to contimplate his impending death. Not even enough time to have really insane nightmares about it. Where is the justice in that?
