When you "mash" on the gas pedal, does the engine stay running or slowly cut off?
If so, the most likely problems are:
1 Fuel filter clogged and not suppling enough fuel to the engine when you "mash" on the gas pedal.
2 There is also usually a filter inside the gas tank before the fuel pump, and that filter may be clogged.
3 Your fuel pump going out and needs to be replaced
4 You have bad gasoline in your tank.
5 Fuel injectors need to be cleaned.
If after you "mash" on the gas pedal and it stays running fine, but then cuts off only after you release the gas pedal. Check the air filter.

Most likely the car has a vacuum leak. It idles fine, but then cuts off after you release the gas because the car goes too lean too fast.
You can check this without buying any parts and changing fuel filters and stuff by simply hooking up a vacuum gage to one of the vacuum lines and actuating the throttle from under the hood while you are watching the gage. If the vacuum does not increase dramatically when you release the throttle there is a vacuum leak somewhere. All you have to do is find it and plug it. It usually only requires replacing a 2-3 dollar piece of rubber tubing.
Alternatively, you can hook up scanning software to the engine computer, and watch the MAP from the software, but this requires extensive knowledge of the software and computer.
