Because most postcards are for sending when you're on vacation...like, travel postcards. You send them to show people where you are visiting. Although I have on occasion sent my mom postcards from New Hampshire, where I live now, b/c she lives in GA and has never been here. Also, sometimes people send out a couple postcards of where they've been, after they get home from their trip. So you don't always have to be out of town. But it's the general practice. lol

You don't you can let that person know you are thinking of them by dropping a special note. There is no rule as to when you can send a postcard.
