I'm no racist and hold nothing against any ethnic group. But when you're on the phone, or hear people call into a radio show or something, you can't always tell if someone "sounds white," but you can almost always tell if someone "sounds black." Why is that?
It's almost like a slight Southern drawl, but it seems to fit all over the country.
BTW, I mean to offend no one, but if you claim you haven't noticed this, you're either lying or ignorant.

Excuse me, Amazingly Intelligent, but I'm not "hearing what I want to hear." When I call, say, my credit card company to ask about something on my bill, I can almost instantly tell if the person on the other end is black. I don't know how to describe the auditory difference other than it sounds like a SLIGHT Southern drawl; not as pronounced as your average southerner (black OR white), but tinges of it.
I'm clearly not calling my credit card company with some kind of anti-black agenda, nor did I say it sounded "better" or "worse" than any other kind of accent. It's just something I notice and am honest enough to spell out here. So thank you for blessing all of us with your knee-jerk reactionary accusations of racism.

I completely understand what you're talking about most people can tell the difference between a black persons voice and a white persons voice.

I'll answer quick before your question gets pulled for being racist, which it is. You are projecting. You are hearing what you want to hear. I speak with very proper diction. I was raised in the North, as were my parents. None of us have or had a southern accent or drawl. Not that anything would be wrong if we did.
Stop watching music videos! That style of speaking is a marketing tool. If you'd ever watched network news or even the Oprah show you wouldn't be making this flawed statement in the form of a question. Ever watch 60 minutes with Ed Bradley?
Here's a question for you and people like you, WHY are you so FASCINATED with African-American people? Does looking for flaws in others help you feel better about yourself?
I find nothing more pathetic than a poor, ignorant white individual in a country where the color of your skin gives you an automatic advantage. If you are so superior, why aren't you rich and intelligent?

During the slave trade Africans had an accent to the way they spoke english because it wasn't their native language. Then the slaves weren't educated so they pronounced the word wrong anyway. They didn't have anyone to correct them because it was against the law to educate slaves during slavery. So that drawl is still in the black community. You will notice the drawl is more predominate in the south where slavery was practiced the most.

Perhaps you haven't heard the voices of Charlene Hunter-Gault, Eileen Stewart, Althea Gibson, Barbara Jordan, Cicely Tyson, Leontyne Price, Barack Obama, Angela Davis, Ruby Dee Gwendolyn Brooks to name a few. Oh!! I forgot and me.
Seriously it has to do with demographics environment, public education, family issues and a person's willingness and desire to speak correctly. Everyone does not have that desire. And for some reason that is OK.. Accept people where they are, not where you want them to be.

Wow, I just love people who ask a racist question or sterotype a certain group of people and say "I'm no racist".
Contrary to what some of the people that answered this question said, you can not tell if someone is black or white by a voice on the phone. I know this because many people have been surprised after meeting me and my husband after talking to us on the phone.
It's because of the location they live in or their educational background. Your question and comments give away your racism.

i am from Louisiana and for some reason people always tell me i sound like i am from up north. however, i have never been up north and its too cold for me. but since i hear it a lot, i started asking what makes me sound like i am from up north and people say it's because i am very well spoken. now this saying comes from mostly whites so i guess black and white people from the south just sound like they are from the south. a region has a lot to do with it if you ask me. like people from cali say cuuuuzin instead of cousin and people from boston say marynate instead of marinate. i don't think it is a black white thing, but just a regional thing.

It is lazy talk. They talk with a slang to fit in with all their homies in the ghetto. It's not limited to black people. Black, white, whatever color you are if you care about the way you talk, and you are taught to enunciate, then over the phone or radio, no one would be able to distinguish what color you are.
