It certainly isn't because the waiting staff is being overpaid. Why do I have to tip a waiter? Shouldn't they get paid by the restaurant they work for instead?

That's a reason why chain restaurants might be expensive.

One of the reasons good restaurants are expensive is that they buy good produce, good hormone-free meats, hire talented chefs to cook it. Those products cost money and the chefs command salaries in line with their talent.

People think restaurants make money hand over fist. Actually, most profitable restaurants only make about 5-8 cents profit for every $1 of revenue generated. There's a lot more going on than people see. Rent, insurance, utilities, labor, cost of goods, it all adds up to a lot more $$$ than one might think.

No. It's because restaurants have to pay for food, employees, rent, utilities, and still come out ahead with a profit. You foot the bill for all of that. That's why something that costs $14 a plate would cost you $14 to make for your entire family at home.

I think the reason dining out is getting so expensive is because many food chains are realizing that lots of people dine out for recreational and social reasons. Due to competition many food chains are adding signature professional chefs recipes. for example Tyler Florence is a high profile signature chef who has endorsed Applebees new menu line and you and I both know that there has been a explosion of talent in the cooking field those food chains have to pay high profile money to those high profile names it's all about the money.

It's totally a supply and demand type market. People are either too lazy, don't have the time...or maybe just can't cook anymore. Of course the restaurants are going to jack up the prices. People keep paying it!! Plus gas is expensive. So, you have to figure their bills are going up for deliveries, electricity...everything. IT'S A NEVER ENDING CYCLE OF MADNESS!! =)

Supply and demand. They're filling up most of these places like Applebee's, Unos, etc. People are getting lazier, with less time, and eating out in ever-increasing numbers. Thus, the demand goes up, with the same or a slower growing supply, and so to does the price go up.

its because people are to lazy to cook and the demand is high and they can get the prices and things are high because people are so called eating better and i also think its cause if farmers have bad year they have to mark price up to gain back profit for loss
