Sure, he probably was a nice guy and such. Maybe the news refers to every president who dies as "great". But is it warranted for this particular president? What did he do (never mind the pardoning of Nixon)?

President Ford did set some historic records, he was the longest living president (age 93), and the first to ever become vice-president and president without being elected by the public. Also his administration oversaw the Helsinki Accords and the final withdrawal of military personnel from Vietnam.

I wouldn't say he was a great president, more like a unique president. By pardoning Nixon he was able to help this country close the chapter on Watergate. He was the only president that no one voted for, he was just ushered in because of the resignation

He pulled the country out of the pit that Tricky Dickie had dug it into. By pardoning Nixon, he showed that he had the vision to take an unpopular action in order to serve the greater good of the country.

Also, Chevy Chase wouldn't have been able to develop his 'falling down president' schtick if it wasn't for Gerald Ford.

The "pardoning of Nixon" was a really classy way to put an immediate end to a scandal that was rocking this country. and.
.He tripped over things allot.
Other then that ...he kept the country moving foreword (no small feat)...and...
He loved this country enough to run it.

He invented the "WIN" button, irritated women (they seemed to enjoy taking pot-shots at him,) and was notoriously honest. He also was brave enough to wear a plaid leisure suit.

I would call him "notable," but not "great" in the sense of James Polk or Millard Fillmore.

President Ford, if he did nothing else, gave us back our integrity. He was a man of honor, a man who loved his country.
