She was dead, and later on he remarried, but I think that is when they had him leave the show.

His late wife was mentioned only once on the show; that's why it was so unique; at that time of very strong families; with a mother and father and a low divorce rate; many networks did not think the show would work. Obviously they were wrong and it allowed Andy to date various pretty and interesting women. One of the great all shows of all time. RIP Don Knotts.
