So...

I bought a copy of XP from a small computer shop in town...

"£80?"...bargin!

The guy hands me a small brown cardboard box, says its an "OEM" but "it will work fine", foolishly I trust his word and pay the £80.

When I got home I had a look at it and it says all this stuff about "only to be distributed with a new computer" all over it....It looks like an official Microsoft product.

Finally got my machine to boot from the CD, I kept getting stuck at the "KERNEL DEBUGGER DLL" stage...I take it there is some sort of link between this slightly under-hand version of XP and the trouble I'm having re-installing?

I've still got the receipt, so If I take it back tommorow and ask politley for a refund...Is it worth me telling him that Microsoft might be interested to hear about his antics if he doesn't oblige?

The contents of the CD are identical to the Retail Boxed version ....only the licensing is different.

It is a version sold only to PC manufacturers & assemblers & is meant to be sold & installed on a new PC by the manufacturer.

As long as you have a key on the Microsoft holographic label you should be fine.

O = original
E = equipment
M = manufacturer

The error generated during the installation is related to a hardware issue on your PC.

(some OEM CDs distributed by HP or Dell, etc... may only install on their own brands of PCs...if this were the case it would say so on the media)

No, actually he could be right. I'll explain...

There are some OEM copies distributed from big name vendors like HP or Dell. These discs won't work for you (if that's what he gave), because they are specifically designed to detect an HP or Dell computer.

However, most OEM discs floating around out there are generic. OEM just means that you can't receive support directly from Microsoft. The disc, however, is pretty much identical to a retail disc and you will be able to receive updates from their website.

I recommend you search on the net using quotes around part of the error message. You should find a lot of suggestions on how to fix it if you dig deep enough. If you're still stuck, go to http://www.tek-tips.com for help in the Windows XP forum.

for the money you paid you should have received a box about the size of a ream of copy paper (500 sheets) inside would have been a folder containing the XP CD with halographic Windows images all over it.
Take back the CD the small box he put it in and your receipt and demand an original copy of XP or your money back Or you'll inform Billy Gates about this.
Then take your money and go to a regular electronics store( in the states we have Best Buy) and buy XP from there

Example: with dell they give a disk with XP on it
when is searches the hardware on your machine
it looks for dell parts &/or bios when it cant find it it will throw out errors.

mostly likely he sold you something like that.
