It would really depend on the genre and author. Some of my favorite books are the Harry Potter series, The Ender's Game series (and it's companion series Ender's Shadow) by Orson Scott Card, The Chronicals of Narnia was pretty good (but I would recommend not trying to read them straight through and take a break about half way through). Anything by Chris Crutcher.
The Keys of the Kingdom series by Garth Nix. The Pendragon series, can't remember who writes them though. The Shadow Children series by Margaret Haddix Peterson (some of her other books are pretty good too.) And Cynthia Voigt (especially the Tillerman series).
I know most of these books fall in the YA catagory but they're good books anyway. If you're looking for something more "adult" you could try a classic like 1984

Can't choose just one. Here's some of my faves: Interview With The Vampyre, The Vampyre Lestat, The Witching Hour, Lasher, Taltos, Memnoch The Devil (all by Anne Rice). And um, Threshold, Murder of Angels, Low Red Moon, To Charles Fort With Love, Wrong Things and Alabaster by Caitlin R. Kiernan.

I have tons of books that I love a lot, but I'd have to say one of my all time favorites would be The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. Also, Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Both very unique stories, tales of faraway places.
