Young boys are seraching for ways to express them selves. Young boys will even hit a girl or pinch her not knowing what else to do. fathers don't teach their sons enough about how to express their feelings of liking a girl. Sounds like he wanted to pay you a compliment but was embarrased and tried to down-play it and wound up saying something stupid. It may have also been an insult. Not enough info. Kinda depends on other behaviour exhibited by him. Keep your distance until he learns how to act. other factors could be other people who are nearby. Boys sometimes act like jerks when their friends are around ...

with all the metal, old mobiles (or cellphones if you prefer), perfectly reusable building materials and so on that gets thrown away, all the garbage in the world is probably worth quite a lot.
That said, unless he's being intentionally confusing, it isn't worth as much as all the gold and diamonds in the world, which would have been a better compliment.
Even if it was an insult it's not a very good one.

Well, depending on his mentality and/or his intellectual development, it actually could be a compliment. From a kid's viewpoint, I see it as an insult. "You're equivalent to tons of garbage."
From a more mature or poetic viewpoint, "You are worth going through and enduring all the troubles (garbage) in the world just to be around, (just to know, just to touch, etc.)"
You're the only one who can say if he's adult enough to have meant the latter.

I wouldnt take it as a comliment at all...garbage is not flattering no matter how much there is. there is nothing to be confused about now. He was not saying that in a nice way hunnie. If he was then he has a funny way of showing his appreciation for someone.
