In dispute with Terry G, it kinda depends on what you call a contract. Pre-pay card services (like I have with T-mobile) have no contract as such. They do have rules of usage, but you are under no obligation to buy another card and once you have reached the Golden level, you have a full year to get another card. Contract services, such as Sprint can lock you in to 2 years with terrible charges to get out of it or change services. Those fees can run several hundreds of dollars. Verizon, T-mobile and several others now offer non-contract services as a means to grab market share from the ones that force you to get a contract.
At the time you activated your phone did you sign a contract? Was the phone a gift? Try calling customer services (or customer noservice depending on the company) and they should be able to tell you what service you have and what restrictions it may have. You may even be able to do that on-line. Hope that helps.
