My usb port shows as working fine in the device manager. Shows no problems at all. But anytime I plug in a usb device of any kind it just doesn't read it. It won't register that anything is being plugged in. Any suggestions on how to fix this because it is a real problem right now. Thanks.

You may have some bad wiring. Is it for one port or all USB ports? If it's just one, you could get a USB Hub. If it's for all ports, you could replace the motherboard or get a PCI USB card. The PCI USB card is probably the cheapest fix.

Before anything, check and make sure that it's not showing up in My Computer. Autoplay works on both CDs and USB and, if autoplay is disabled for a certain type of device, you may not get a visual confirmation that anything was plugged in.

Also, check the Removable Media icon in your Taskbar; it will be just to the left of the clock and look like a tiny device with a green arrow. If you see that, left-click it once and see what devices are listed; that will tell you if it found the USB device.

Most modern computers come with multiple USB slots. Generally, there are at least two on the front of the computer (usually in two different places) and at least two (usually four) on the back of the computer. The difference between the ones on the front and the ones on the back is this: The ones on the front are attached externally to the motherboard using a cable, while the ones on the back are part of the motherboard itself. If the ones on the front don't function as you'd like, then it may be a case where those front USB ports are not plugged in, or are plugged in incorrectly. The best way to determine this is to try one of the USB ports on the back of your system.

Finally, check Device Manager (under Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager) for two separate sections. The first section you want to look at is the one labelled "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"; that listing will specify all of the USB ports currently recognized by Windows. If you expand that section, you should be able to see right off if any of them are not functioning correctly; they will either have a yellow "!" or a red "x". The yellow "!" means that the device was found but is not operating correctly (possibly a driver issue), while the red "x" means that the device has been disabled.

The second section you'll be looking for is called "Human Interface Devices". If your USB drive is detected and all drivers are correct, then your USB device will be listed in this section. If the driver is not correct but the device was recognized, then it will be listed in the section called "Other Devices".

If none of this works for you, I'd suggest either checking the manufacturer's website for FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) or a help forum. If neither of those are present and it's still not working, use Google and specify the name of the USB drive... it is quite probable that you are not the only person experiencing this issue if none of the above steps help.

Maybe the USB driver is corrupted. Uninstall and reinstall the driver. I think you can do that in device manager.

You may want to update the drivers, A good website is www.driveragent.com and if you have a USB hub they don't work well at all

You'll notice that most computers have two usb slots at each place that they appear... Try the other one for better proformance... The lower one I think is the faster one... Good luck...
