Cheerleading and pageants used to be harmless but today they're worse. I don't have too much of a problem with cheerleading because it's an active sport and it encourages girls to get along with each other and work as a team rather than alienate themselves from one another from jealousy. But pageants make me sick.

Maxine, I love your question and me as a red blooded hetrosexual could not agree more. I find both pagents and cheerleading very demeaning to women. Although I find nothing wrong with porn as long as the woman is over 18 and is a willing participant and gets paid for it. Mostly the pagents and cheerleading are demeaning to young girls and if I were a girl, I would be completley confused about the whole thing.

Some girls get into pageants because they offer huge scholarships to the finalists. Pageants are also not all about beauty; the interview counts for more than a third of the total score, so girls have to be articulate, smart, and actually have a personality if they expect to win. I do think that putting 5 year olds on stage in 10 pounds of make-up is wrong, for sure. Girls should be old enough to decide for themselves if they want to participate.

Cheerleading is pure athlesticism. It is definitely more demanding than softball or some other girls' sports. It also fosters self-confidence and teamwork, and girls have to keep their grades up in order to stay on the team. I think those are all good things that set girls up for success later in life.

The best thing about women's rights is that now we can CHOOSE whatever we want to be. Before, if we wanted to participate in sports, we had no choice but to join the cheerleading or dance squad, because there were no other options.... sports just wasn't "feminine." Now, we can be a cheerleader, play on our school team, or even join the mostly-male football team. We can choose if we want to enter a beauty pageant to try and get a scholarship, or we can study our butts off for it, or we can excel at a sport. We can choose to stay home with the kids, or we can choose to run for President. Or we can do both. It's all good, and it's all up to us. Don't knock the next girl because she chooses a different path than yours.

I think that women's rights and feminism is all about women doing what they want to do and having the opportunity to do so. Some women want to get by on their looks, be subservient to their husbands or run their entire world from the kitchen of their own home while they stay home and raise children - while many others want to run a business, teach school, get into politics or cure disease. What I think has turned out unexpectedly is that many of us get to do a lot of different things in our own lifetime, having radically different segments of our lives and get to really experience all of life's rich pagaent.

Beauty contests are a great way for some folks to get the education money they need to go on and change the world - who cares if the woman had to wear a bathing suit for 1 hour to have her medical career paid for? Some of those women really think it is fun - it is as close to being a star as they will ever get most times. Same with cheerleaders. I even knew a woman who stripped for a couple of years - and she felt safe in her work and was shocked that people paid her (and so much) to wave her butt in their face. She saved her money, got married and bought a house and hasn't gone back to dancing yet. It is all a matter of perspective and I would not want anything to happen to limit the opportunities of women in america.

Peace!

well. see, you're not standing for rights if you want to take cheerleading and pagents away from girls who like them. they have the right to involve themselves in that type of thing if they so choose. if you have a problem with them then don't participate in them. i understand what you're getting at and why you feel the way you do about them, but by forcing your opinion about rights on others, you are actually destroying rights. do you see?

Cheerleading is not a bad thing. Girls taking advantage of their position as a cheerleader is a bad thing. I am a cheerleader and I find that very offensive since I have never had sex, never drunk an alcoholic beverage, or done any drugs. I don't even swear. I think people just need to stop making stereotypes.

I think you are stereotyping not only those 2 activities but also the girls/women who are attracted to them.

These days, cheerleaders aren't just fluff-brained giggly girls. A lot of athleticism and dedication are required. It's actually more like a sport. Good teams compete in national competitions.

As far as pageants go, they don't only involve so-called beauty anymore. They involve scholarship, personality, involvement in volunteerism and so forth.

Both cheerleading and pageants have come a long way, baby, to coin a phrase!!

I do. I don't like cheerleading or pagents at all ! I think they are extremely degrading for women. I think it's criminal to have events for girls in these things at young ages! What kind of a teaching tool is that?!?!?

I see your point, but I'm on the fence.

I don't see the purpose of cheerleading; it's a useless pursuit IMHO. Sure they're very athletic blah blah blah, but .... well anyway.

Pageants have their good and bad sides. I just can't make up my mind. But I do think the MOST disgusting thing about them are the parents who take them too seriously. They're just sick.
