Ahh yes, the best bassist question. This is always a great start for never ending arguments in bass forums.
Here is the thing, what makes a bassist the best? How many notes they can play? How fast they can slap? How many technical tricks they can put in a song?
Yes Jaco is/was an excellent bassist, but so is Billy Sheenan for completely different reasons. No one has mention Stu Hamm yet, yet he could be the best. Victor Wooten is definitely up the list of best bassists, but here is the thing, would you buy his records? Maybe, maybe not. Flea, in my opinion, is not as good as the bassists I have mention but only on technical grounds, but he is most popular because of his appeal and what he has done in the music industry and promoting the bass guitar to a new generation.
This question is so subjective, it can never be answered. As a bassist myself, i'm a fan of Chris Chaney. He's not the most high profiled bassist, nor ground breaking, but I like his style, attitude, and approach to music so in my opinion he is the best bassist

ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!
There is one, and ONLY one undesputed bass god. If you put anybody ahead of Jaco Pastorious, then you are an idiot. He could play faster, better, more in tune (usually played fretless) as well as better improv and was a good band leader and writer as well. None better. Period. Including Les and Flea.
After Jaco-
Les Claypool, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Richard Bona and Victor Wooten are really good. Then Flea. Then Geddy and the rest.
