I am part Black, but NO ONE in my family is from Africa. They were from ISRAEL. I am Hebrew, NOT African. I can't explain how frustrating this can get.

I also forgot, I am from the tribe of Ephraim; the twelve tribes of Israel. My family carries the name; my family brought the name with them during the slave trade! They refused to change their name to a White name to keep their culture. They were JEWS. OK?

Most people are simply ignorant (uneducated). I get this alot from white people (no offense). My roots have been traced back to India but not Africa.

Blacks need to be referred to as Black Americans and not African Americans (especially when a lot of us have no ties to Africa at all). Yes people, there is a huge difference. Lol

lol @ donna.
I'm West indian. People seem to think that african american is 'opposite' white. So what am I? i live in britain, and I would like to tell you NOW, that I am neither african american, nor african british. So, I don't know. I (think I) can tell that your family in israel goes a long way back, and I think that you know anyway that somewhere along the line they began in africa somewhere, BUT, then, some would then argue that everyone; i.e white, black, asian etc, came from africa, something to do with the world's oldest fossils. I am not saying that that is my belief in particular ( i feel no particular way about it), but it only serves the question - how many generations back do we go before we claim our racial heritage? Because for some it's two generations, for others it's all about the prehistoric ancestors, and for some more, it's about where we were born. So it's kinda up to you honey.
p.s, Donna, hush up silly.

Ok slaves came from Africa. You say your family carried their name during the slave trade. Everyone who is black came from Africa one way or another. Your Black African ancestors just moved to Israel FROM Africa many many years ago. If your Black, you have African ancestry. It cracks me up how cubans and other latinos say that too when they are black. Um derrrr, the slave ship didnt only stop off in America. Education is Power. Learn your history youngins.

Okay.....2 things. Number 1, the fact that you are from one of the original twelve tribes is exciting and something you should be very proud of. Not only are you an heir to the promise of Abraham, but you are an HEIR to the PROMISE OF ABRAHAM! That's off the chain! Number 2....Hebrew and Cuban? Will you marry Me?

So you are half black, half Israeli with the name Cubana? Damn, that is messed up!

Seriously you are mixed therefore you cannot claim ownership to any single ethnicity. It's the truth. You are half African and half Israeli. You have both but aren't a full member of either.

I have the same situation to a point. I am 100% white and both my parents come from Western Europe but different countries in Europe. Therefore I cannot claim ownership of either culture fully. It sucks, hey?!

Why care what people think? If it bothers you that bad then wear a sign on your back saying "My Ancestors are not from Africa, but from Israel!" Do you think that's going to gain you more friends by letting people know? There is no shame about your ancestors coming from one or the other. Be who you are and stop worrying about what other people think. Be a leader and not a follower. My ancestors are Indians but I consider myself to be a black female and damn proud of it! If I was to die and had a choice of being resurrected, I would still want to come back as a black woman. I never in my entire life worried about what people thought about me. Not even my family. I love me! And basically that's what it's all about! Loving yourself 1st! Damn what others like or think!

Your lineage would be traced back to Africa. Even if its traced from here through Israel and to the African continent. Be proud! land of great beauty!

Maybe because in the 70's the black population decided that they needed to be identified to as "African" Americans and people are trying to be politically correct.
You could politely explain or comepletely ignore it. You are an individual be yourself.

That must be annoying. This is why I HATE the term African-American. Most people of color are not from Africa. They may have had some ancestors from there, but chances are, it was several generations ago. Stereotypes are bad, but they are hard to beat. People are ignorant, and will group others as soon as possible.
