my hamster eats, sleeps, runs, and poops in the same excercise wheel..i need to take it out to clean it, but when i do, he screeches and starts chewing on the bars. Is it common for them to screech? And, I need advise on how to clean it without disturbing him!

Hamsters do that when they're in pain or feel they're in danger. I don't know why he's so afraid - he may be overly territorial. Maybe you should try giving him a yogurt treat and place him a box with sunflower seeds and a bit of bedding or pu thim in his hamster ball.

the hamster isn't used to you yet, as you just said you just got him. but if a hamster is properly socialized, meaning it'll take a while and lot of patience, he can turn into a very friendly animal. As i'm sure you may be aware if they feel threatened they bite too, their screech noise is just their way of saying hey leave me alone get outta here, who are ya, get or i'll bite you, he's just simply not used to human contact or touch. go get a hamster book it'll explain it all better than i can

He is throwing a little Hamster Tantrum.
I would just buy a second exercise wheel.
And rotate them(no pun).
It is kinda like taking a convicts TV away.....isn't it?
Maybe the hamster thinks you are confiscating wheel.

my hamster does the same thing. i thought he was strange but now i know that other hamsters do that. you have to take the wheel out to clean it. the truth is, he's spoiled just like mine. it's like a spoiled child having a fit because you took away their toy. i clean my hamsters wheel and cage with white vinegar and water. but while i'm doing that i put sniffles in his ball and let him roam the house. works well for us.
